Welcome to my Kill Team Progress Blog

Back in July my wife and I decided to take the plunge and start playing Kill Team. She had always wanted a Sisters of Battle (Adepta Sororitas) army but when she started wargaming 10 years back after we began dating they were all metal and all out of print.  She got in with a space wolves army and quickly found that she much perfered the modeling and painting aspect of the hobby to the long teadius battles played on the large scale that Warhammer 40k uses. She lost interest and sold her space Wolves. I Had been in the 40k hobby since 3rd edition having played Tau, Thousand Sons and Ravenwing over the various years but having not touched anything GW since 6th edition 40k as we had opted for the smaller more skirmish battles provided by Privateer Presses Warmachine and Hordes. Though we still have our Khador (me), and Menoth (her) for Warmachine and Circle Orboros (me) and Legion of Everblight (her)  for Hordes we took this time to jump into Kill team.

In the beginning She chose a sisters team and I went back to T'au having sold all of my first tau army in 2010  it was the nostalgic choice. then one day she approached me with an idea that instead of one team since the cost was much less than full on armies we should build instead 3 teams each, an Empire team, a Chaos team, and a Xenos Team. My Xenos was taken care of with T'au and her Empire with Sisters, so we set about choosing 2 more teams each. She picked Thousand sons for her chaos and though I still had my old army of metal plastic hybrid Rubrics from 3rd edtion she wanted the new fancy Rubric models (and who could blame her they are gorgeous) and then picked Eldar (Aeldari) for her Xenos. For me I went with Space Marines for my Empire force and for Chaos I went with Chaos Marines.

For my Tau force, I picked a different colour scheme than the last tau I painted but stuck with D'yanoi as my Scept (They have no rules for D'yanoi Scept so I plan to use the DAL’YTH SEPT: ADAPTIVE CAMOUFLAGE rules for my Hunter Cadre which currently consists of Pathfinders, Stealth Suits, and a Start collecting box. (not all of which can be in a 20 man maatched play roster of course.)

For Adeptus Astartes I had always had in the back of my mind a project involving Loyalists from traitor legions who escaped Istvaan III similar to Nathaniel Garro and his crew on the Eisenstein. Over the years GW, and black library authors have retconned the specifics around the eisenstein and since it had 70 men on it much too many for kill team I decided to make my own fluff. I picked up Two boxes of the GW Plastic Mark III Marines to make a 20 man Matched Play Kill team roster and decided to build them as 5 marines each from the World Eaters, Death Guard, Emperors Children and Luna Wolves. (Having changed their name back from Sons of Horus) I figure these are guys who some how through Deus Ex Machina have ended up escaping Istvaan and ended up in the 41st mellenium  to hunt down Heretic Astartes (with a focus on those from their own legions). I have a feeling this might also mean they would get targeted by Inquisitorial forces who don't believe they could possibly be loyalist and it also gave me a good excuse to paint 4 different colour schemes.

As for chaos I thought It might be neat to build a "Horde army" by using lots of cultists and maybe I could also build an all women chaos cult that was being lead by some Alpha Legion guys because back in my day only alpha legion had access to cultists. For this project I grabbed some Necromunda Escher gangers, the cultist champion, and Heavy Stubber lady out of the Blackstone Fortress Cultists of the Abyss box to beef me up to 12 cultists and then filled the other 8 slots with 4 Alpha legion Chaos Space Marine Gunners and 4 Alpha Legion Terminators.

On this page I'm going to post my progress towards the completion of each of the 3 teams. The T'au team are almost fully painted at this point and I don't plan to paint the other teams until I have the tau team fully painted. though at present I think I will leave the Chrisis suits from the start collecting box unassembled as it is less likely I will field them in kill team.

The Iluminated and the Cult of the Ancient Muse.

"We are the Illuminated. We sow the seeds of discontent, that we may reap the contented." Our uncle Lorgar Aurelian wrote Lectitio Divinitatus which has formed the basis of the imperial cult. With his words the eclesiarchy subdue imperial citizens. We must root out and destroy all who follow a cult derived from the works of heritics.... For the emperor.

The Iluminated are an Alpha legion warband who have been known to strike out against imperial worlds specifically targeting items pertaining to the imperial cult. They have been known to stir up chaos cults on the worlds they visit in an effort to draw out forces of the Ordo Hereticus. Once the eclesiarchy has sent Adepta Sororitas forces to defend the planets icons and cathedrals they use the cult to aid in killing the sisters then they murder any remaining cultists and flee to their next target. Should they be unable to lure the sisterhood to them and instead be met with resistance from Astra Millitarum or Adeptus Astartes they will simply kill the cultists and flee leaving no enemies for the assembled forces of the emperor to fight.

The Illuminated were last seen in segmentium Solar on a world known as Terra Novus, which had been colonised since long before the dark age of technology most likely longer than even Cthonia adoptive world of Horus and the Luna Wolves which is said to have existed close enough to Terra to have been accessible by non warp ships. The planet and ancient colony were both discovered by an explorer team of Magus Bilogus 9119369.M41 who had been attempting to locate suitable places for new colonies. The world which was devoid of all lifeforms had lost its biosphere in some form of ancient catastrophe they determined. as they explored the planet they found ruins of a colony which if they were reading the pre-imperial dates correctly placed it at 9368069.M3. Among the items found were recordings of the original colonists describing their journey to the new world and the catastrophe that destroyed their colony. Among the recordings they found data storage devices filled with strange ancient music and so as they constructed their new colony they placed these items into a museum where the imperial colonists could view and listen directly to their forbearers of Terra Novus. In 7187666 M41a Slaanesh chaos cult appears to have sprung up on Terra Novus (not doubt spurred by intervention from the Illuminated) Calling themselves the Cult of the Ancient Muse they recruit solely from the female populous and all initiates must select a name from among the female artists found in the ancient music discs.

Memoirs Of Istvaan

10,000 years ago at the beginning of the horus heresy four legions of Adeptus Astartes attempted to purge the loyalist elements in their ranks. At Istvaan III loyal members of the Sons of Horus, Death Guard, World eaters, and Emperors Children, mostly Terran marines from before the discovery of Horus, Mortarion, Angron and Fulgrum were sent to quell rebellion and then virus bombed. Were it not for the quick actions of Emperors Children captain Saul Tarvitz all would have been lost in the initial bombing but thanks to him many loyalists were able to find shelter in bunkers and survive the bombs. Inside one such bunker a group of loyalists from all four legions lay in wait for the sign that it was safe to exit and take the fight to their brothers. Unfortunately during his legions decent to the planet one of the world eaters landing craft had crashed, blocking the exit to this bunker and trapping the 20 marines inside. As the fighting raged on, for three full months they were powerless to do anything. With supplies running low and morale even lower they were finally able to pry open the door just enough to get into the damaged landing craft "Angel's Fury" which had been left behind by the world eaters. The craft though small did possess a warp engine, and also a homing beacon that could lead them to its parent ship. The 20 marines set out from Istvaan in hopes of performing stealth attacks on the main traitor armada but unfortunately none of the 20 possessed the navigator gene to allow for safe warp travel and the became moored in a warp eddie.

As they lingered in the warp various demons breached the hull of the ship each type of demon trying to convert the loyal men inside to the same cause as their traitor brothers. Plague bearers descended on the death guard crew, Daemonettes on the Emperors Children, Bloodletters on the World Eaters and Chaos Undivided Furies on the Luna wolves crew. Just as all was though lost a shining yellow orb appeared to the crew and banished the Daemons. The orb spoke to the four leaders among the crew stating "I am, Emperor of man and for you my most loyal sons I have a mission." the emperors projection then spoke to them about how they had been stranded for 10,000 years and that though Horus had failed the Emperor had been mortally wounded and placed upon a golden throne to oversee the empire of man and the light of the astronomicon.

He tasked them with the exact mission they had hoped he would hunting down and killing their former brothers.

Memoirs of Istvaan was the new name the marines selected for the landing craft that bore them and also the name they selected for their group, and since appearing in the 41st millennium they have been known to show up to a world besieged by Chaos Marines, destroy the heretics and leave as quickly as they came. Only a few times have they been spotted long enough to warrant further investigation and in all cases Imperial forces have believed them to be agents of chaos. Beset on all sides by enemies and with no one to trust but each other they make their way across the galaxy in search of those who sought to kill them so many years ago.

As you can see I have plenty more Vorthos to do to this roster and as that progresses I plan to edit this post to reflect that. I've been doing research via Lexicanum and from what I was able to determine the Terran members of the Luna Wolves came from areas around Persia, the emperors children were drawn from European nobility, the Death guard from the English, and the World eaters from all over Terra but focusing on more aggressive individuals so my plan for them is to pick names from a variety of cultural backgrounds that sound like they could belong to an aggressive man..
